Academic Programs
BEOC career and short-term programs prepare students for state or national industry certification credentials and entry-level jobs. Students who do not have industry related experience can access internship opportunities to gain on the job training and experience. While enrolled, students engage in career development activities with career advisors, and can participate in internships and externships for employment experience.
Note: A high school diploma or equivalency is required for all career programs, except for Security Guard Training. Prior work experience and training are also considered for admission if applicants do not meet TABE score requirements. Applicants without a diploma may enroll in the High School Equivalency Program, and upon completion, transfer to a career program.
Program durations may vary, and the listed modules and courses are provided as a guide and are not final.
Modules 1, 2, and 3 are all required components of the BEOC program. Each module is graded and must be successfully completed to graduate, be recognized as a program completer, and qualify for certification testing. Module 3, in particular, is not optional or separate-it is an essential part of the program sequence. Completion is determined by passing all required courses across all modules, not by the number of weeks attended.
College Preparation Program
The College Preparation program helps students to transition into college, by acquiring the skills and knowledge necessary to successfully complete college-level courses. College Prep students prepare for college entrance examinations and are expected to enroll in a college or university upon completion of the program
English Speakers for Other Languages (ESOL)
This is an evening program that focuses on helping students speak, read and write English well. There are two levels of ESOL at BEOC: Intermediate and Advanced. Both levels help students to improve their English language skills in reading, writing, speaking, and listening in order to continue their education or gain employment. Students focus on academic and work-related vocabulary. At the Advanced Level, students also take an Introduction to Computer course that leads to certification in Microsoft Digital Literacy. However, both levels include computer-aided instruction. Upon completion of ESOL classes, students are encouraged to continue into other BEOC programs: High School Equivalency, College Preparation, or career certificate programs.
High School Equivalency Preparation
This program offers students who have not graduated from high school the opportunity to prepare for the General Educational Development Test (GED). There are three levels of HSE at BEOC: Beginning HSE, Pre HSE, and HSE Preparation. Initial placement is based on admissions test scores. Previous official test scores, as well as high school performance, are also considered for placement. BEOC is an official HSE Testing Center. Students may test as soon as they complete the program.
Beginning HSE courses help students to improve their skills in reading and mathematics. Upon completion, students retest for advancement to higher levels. Course performance and previous official test scores are also considered for placement and advancement.
Students improve their skills in reading, writing, and math skills. Upon completion, students retest to advance to HSE Prep. Course performance and previous official test scores are also considered for placement and advancement.
Students improve and strengthen their skills in reading, writing, math, science and social studies in preparation for the HSE exam. HSE Prep students take the GED Ready to assess readiness for the GED exam. Course performance and previous official test scores are also considered in recommending students to take the GED. BEOC is an official HSE Testing Center. Students are able to test upon completion of their program. Upon receipt of their GED diploma, students may enroll in college preparation or a career program.
