Entry Requirements

Must be 18+ (17 with High School Diploma)

High school diploma or recognized HSE diploma required.
Minimum TABE Reading Score: 563
Minimum TABE Math Score: 550
Must be willing/able to take/pass a drug test (for required externship participation)
Must be willing/able to take/pass a background check (for required externship participation)

Program Information

In the Pharmacy Technician program, students build the practical knowledge and hands-on skills needed to work confidently in retail, hospital, and specialty pharmacy settings. Coursework covers the foundations of pharmacy practice, including federal and state law, patient privacy, professional ethics, medical terminology, and how to read and process prescriptions accurately. Students study pharmacology and the body systems that medications act on, master the calculations that pharmacy work depends on, and learn dispensing workflow, inventory management, insurance billing, sterile and non-sterile compounding, and the safety practices that protect patients.

Eligibility to sit for the ExCPT (Exam for the Certification of Pharmacy Technicians)

Please note the following:

For all NHA exams you must take them in-person at BEOC.
NHA determines final ExCPT examination eligibility.
Passing the NHA exam does not automatically provide New York State registration. Students must apply separately and meet the state requirements.

What days does the class meet?

Monday – Friday from 6-9 PM

Is every class held live on Zoom?

Yes, class will be live at the scheduled time.

What are the required externship hours and schedule?

The requirements may vary depending on the externship location. Generally, externships may be scheduled during the day, evening, or weekends and last approximately 6 weeks

Am I responsible for the cost of the drug screening and background check?

No, BEOC will cover the cost and assist you with the process. The drug screening and background check is required.

What are the computer, internet, and camera requirements?

Students must have a computer with camera, internet access, zoom, etc. BEOC does not provide laptops.

Can 17-year-olds enroll in the Pharmacy Technician program?

Students who are 17 years old may be eligible to enroll if they will turn 18 before the start of Module 3 (approximately 15 weeks after the program begins). New York State requires individuals to be at least 18 years old to become Registered Pharmacy Technicians.

Does this program prepare students for a national certification exam?

Yes. This program prepares students for the NHA ExCPT (Exam for the Certification of Pharmacy Technicians). However, final eligibility to sit for the exam is determined by the National Healthcareer Association (NHA).

Will passing the NHA ExCPT exam automatically make me a Registered Pharmacy Technician in New York State?

No. Passing the NHA ExCPT exam does not automatically provide New York State registration or licensure. Individuals must meet all applicable state requirements and apply separately for registration with New York State.
