About TABE
What is TABE?
TABE stands for Test of Adult Basic Education. BEOC uses TABE to better understand a student’s current reading and/or math level.
How does BEOC use TABE?
BEOC uses TABE to help determine program readiness and the best pathway for each student. Some programs require stronger reading, math, or technical comprehension because of the type of work students will be expected to do, including patient care, safety, documentation, calculations, certification exams, and employment expectations.
Is TABE pass/fail?
No. TABE is not pass/fail. It helps BEOC understand your current academic starting point so we can place you in the program or pathway that best supports your success.
What happens if I do not meet the score for the program I want?
This does not mean you are denied access to BEOC. It means we will help you identify the best next step. That may include retesting, academic support, ESOL, HSE/GED preparation, College Prep, a bridge pathway, or another appropriate program option.
This is not a no. This is a not yet. We want to help you build the skills needed so you can be successful in the program and in your next opportunity.

Frequently Asked Questions
Why do I need to take the TABE assessment?
The TABE assessment helps BEOC understand your current reading and/or math level so we can place you in the program or pathway that best supports your success.
Can I retest?
Students may be eligible to retest based on BEOC’s testing guidelines and availability. Staff will review your score and explain your next step.
Does meeting the TABE score guarantee a seat in the program?
Meeting the TABE score means you have met the academic readiness requirement for that program. Final enrollment may also depend on eligibility, space availability, required documents, attendance at enrollment sessions, and completion of all enrollment steps.
Why are some program scores higher than others?
Some programs require stronger reading, math, or technical comprehension because of the type of work students will be expected to do. This is especially important in programs connected to patient care, safety, documentation, calculations, certification exams, and employment expectations.
